Annual Heritage Award Program Continues to Honor the Legacy of Hon. Randall T. Eng

The fourth annual Hon. Randall T. Eng Award Program was recently held by the Appellate Division, Second Judicial Department in celebration of Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month. Named in honor of the Hon. Randall T. Eng, the first Asian American to serve as Presiding Justice of the New York State Supreme Court, Appellate Division, Second Department, the program recognizes individuals whose leadership, service, and achievements have made a meaningful impact on their communities and the legal profession.

Presiding Justice Hector D. LaSalle, who established the award program in 2023, has described the initiative as a way to celebrate excellence while encouraging greater diversity and representation within the legal system. This year's honorees included New York State Assemblymember Steven Raga, Jo-Ann Yoo, Deputy Executive Director of Asian Americans for Equality, and Kwok Kei Ng, Associate Court Attorney for the New York County Criminal Court.

The award program bears the name of Justice Eng in recognition of his groundbreaking career and lasting influence on New York's judiciary. Throughout a distinguished career in public service, Justice Eng broke barriers as the first Asian American judge in New York State and later became the first Asian American Presiding Justice of the Appellate Division, Second Department. His leadership and mentorship helped pave the way for generations of attorneys and judges who will follow.

Today, Justice Eng serves as Of Counsel to Meyer, Suozzi, English & Klein, P.C., where he continues to share the insight, integrity, and commitment to public service that have defined his remarkable career.
