Wills, Trusts & Estates Law
The Wills, Trusts and Estates Department at Meyer Suozzi offers estate planning, estate and trust administration and estate and trust litigation services to its clients.
Estate Planning
Our attorneys counsel and advise high-net-worth individuals, such as hedge fund managers, executives in the fields of finance, technology and health care, physicians and business owners, in planning the orderly transfer of their wealth. We work collaboratively with clients and their advisors in establishing and implementing wealth-planning goals and objectives.
Our attorneys are experienced in all facets of estate planning, including business succession planning, charitable planning, asset protection planning, same-sex estate planning, and estate, gift and income tax planning. Our attorneys are well-versed in the use of estate planning vehicles such as family limited partnerships, grantor retained annuity trusts (GRATs), dynasty trusts, insurance trusts, private foundations, charitable lead annuity trusts (CLATs), charitable remainder trusts (CRTs), and gifts and sales to defective grantor trusts.
At Meyer Suozzi, we do not view engagements with our clients as one-off transactions. Since life circumstances and state and federal laws often change, we strive to be available to our clients if and when they need our assistance. Our philosophy is to develop and maintain a trusting and long-term relationship with our clients.
Estate and Trust Administration
Our attorneys and paralegals spearhead the administration of decedent’s estates, from probate through the final accounting. We counsel and assist clients with administration issues, such as post-mortem tax planning (including the effective use of disclaimers and alternate valuation, special use valuation and other tax elections), IRS and New York State estate tax audits, and the preparation of estate tax returns.
In addition, our attorneys counsel both fiduciaries and beneficiaries of lifetime and testamentary trusts regarding the administration of such trusts, including trust reformations, decantings, and modifications and terminations.
Estate and Trust Litigation
If litigation is necessary to resolve a claim or dispute, our attorneys are available to represent clients in Surrogate’s Court and Supreme Court in every county in New York State. We handle Will contests, contested accountings, trust and Will constructions, discovery and turnover proceedings, and breach of fiduciary duty cases.
