Carmela T. Montesano is a Trusts and Estates attorney who is Of Counsel to Meyer, Suozzi, English & Klein, P.C. in Garden City, New York. Her practice concentrates in Federal Estate, gift and generation-skipping transfer tax law; state wills, trust and estate administration law; related areas of Federal state corporate and partnership law involving the transfer of ownership and control in family-owned businesses In August 2010, Ms. Montesano was appointed to serve as a Guardian ad Litem in Nassau and Suffolk Counties and in January 2011, she was admitted as a full member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners.
Ms. Montesano authored numerous publications regarding Federal income tax issues and Federal estate and gift tax issues published by BNA TAX Management in its “Tax Practice Series.” In the fall of 2010, she co-authored an article for the NYSBA Elder Law Section entitled “Grantor Retained Annuity Trusts: An Estate Planning Golden Opportunity” (Fall 2010, Vol. 20, No. 4). Ms. Montesano has also authored two chapters for The American Bar Association, the first regarding lifetime gifts to minors which was published in "Tax, Estate & Lifetime Planning for Minors" (May, 2006) and the second regarding qualified personal residence trusts which was published in “Estate Planning Strategies: A Lawyer’s Guide to Retirement and Lifetime Planning” (October, 2002) . In 1995, she co-authored an article entitled “Defective Grantor Trusts: Gift Tax Consequences of Payment of Income Tax Liability by Grantor,” 20 Tax Mgmt. Est., Gifts & Tr. J. 183 (Sept./Oct. 1995).
Previously associated with the law firm of Silverstein & Mullens, now a division of Buchanan, Ingersoll P.C., in Washington, D.C., she has been an estate planning practioner since 1983.
